ADO.NET is a data accessing technology released by the Microsoft .NET framework which provides communication between non-relational and relational systems through a common set of components. It was later developed as a single source program which uses the .NET features of Microsoft.
It provides coherent access to the data sources like XML and SQL server, and the data sources which are exposed through ODBC and OLE DB. ADO.NET can be used by data-sharing consume applications to connect to these data sources and handle, retrieve and update their data.
ADO.NET provides direct methods for direct access within the .NET framework. It provides the functionality for the developers who write managed code which is like the functionality provided to native COM (Component Object Model) developers by ADO (Active Data Objects).
